Step on up: Men are buying sheer, support AND patterned styles
Mr Hughes said that the increased sales are partly down to men liking the extra insulation that tights afford as well as the perceived health benefit of improving blood circulation to the legs.
The main reason, however, appears to be that more and more men like the way the tights look. However, yesterday, fashion experts remained decidedly cool on the trend.
Natalie Theo, the Daily Mail’s fashion editor, said: ‘The whole concept of men in tights is absolutely ridiculous - it sounds like the title to a Monty Python film.
‘It simply cannot see that there would be a market for it, unless they are for men who like to dress up as women.
‘It is not even as though tights would be comfortable: yes women love wearing them in the winter, but men might find the tight waist band uncomfortable. And they’ve got hairy legs. It’s metrosexuality gone stark raving mad.’
Not only are more and more men wearing tights on the High Street - they are also likely to become increasingly popular in the air.
Aviation health experts recommend that all air travellers wear special ‘high pressure’ travel tights to combat jet lag and deep vein thrombosis.
